Brand Design

Product Illustration

Egress is a B2B SaaS company, which creates software that plugs into Outlook in order to provide email security functionality. It also has a secure online file sharing software. Both of these need to be able to be represented on the website and in materials, showcasing specific features.

Project goals:

1) To communicate specific features of products without losing effectiveness with unnecessary detail.
2) Help support the overall brand identity by creating a consistent style.

The problem

Representing the product using screenshots is quicker than illustration and is necessary for some materials like user guides, however for marketing materials there are a few problems with this approach.

  • The images can sometimes be small, and so are illegible when using a screenshot (even when the screenshot has been edited and enhanced it can be difficult to see what is going on)
  • When using product images for marketing you want a specific feature you are talking about to stand out, so you can focus attention on items that are relevant to specific use cases
  • Simple screenshots do not help to support the brand in the way that illustration does
  • For the products which plug into Outlook, some of their functionality was getting drowned out by details within the Outlook product

The solution

By creating illustrations then extra text or labels can be blurred out so that the focus is only on the parts of the product that are relevant for the specific feature being referenced.

I created this illustration style also to support the brand, meaning that this style of illustration is instantly recognisable as belonging to Egress.

Where it is more suitable to use screenshots, these are still in use, however placing them in real-world situations (such as the background image above) is preferable.
